Our Story
About Dogwood & Deathcap
Dogwood & Deathcap is an independent advisory studio focused on risk evaluation and operational clarity for construction and development projects across Southwestern Virginia.

Our work is based on a simple premise: most project failures are not caused by poor intent or lack of capital. They occur when critical risks remain invisible until construction is already underway.

Dogwood & Deathcap exists to surface those risks early.

We conduct independent market and operational evaluations designed to identify blind spots before capital is committed and to monitor projects objectively as they move through execution.

Our role is not to replace developers, architects, or contractors. Our role is to provide clear, third-party insight into the operational environment surrounding a project so investors and property owners can make informed decisions.

Why This Work Matters
Construction and development shape the long-term future of a region.

Successful projects create housing, support local employment, and strengthen the economic stability of the communities where they are built. Poorly planned projects, however, can stall, fail, or create long-term structural problems that affect both investors and the surrounding community.

Dogwood & Deathcap approaches project evaluation with both realities in mind.

We live and work in the Blue Ridge region. The communities affected by these developments are the same communities where we raise our families, work with local businesses, and build our lives.
Because of that, our work is guided by a dual responsibility:
-
Protecting the capital and success of our clients’ projects
-
Supporting development that strengthens the long-term stability of the region
-

When projects succeed, everyone benefits. Investors see returns, builders create jobs, and communities gain housing, infrastructure, and economic momentum.

Our role is to help ensure that success is built on clear information rather than assumptions.

Regional Focus
Dogwood & Deathcap operates with a focused regional scope, primarily serving projects throughout Southwestern Virginia and the surrounding Blue Ridge corridor.

Each engagement is intentionally selective and designed to provide disciplined analysis, objective reporting, and practical insights that help projects move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
Meet The Fouder
Dogwood & Deathcap was founded by Cody A. Jones, an operations strategist with experience across public service, nonprofit leadership, and private-sector construction environments.

His background includes work in law enforcement, nonprofit operations, and construction field coordination, roles that provided direct exposure to how projects move from concept to execution and where breakdowns most often occur.

Through this experience, he developed a practical understanding of how regional conditions, operational planning, and communication structures influence project outcomes.

Dogwood & Deathcap was established to apply that operational perspective to development and construction projects throughout Southwestern Virginia.

A Note from the Founder
Dogwood & Deathcap began from a simple belief: we do not have to wait for someone else to make our communities better.
Real progress often comes from people who care about the places they live and are willing to invest their time, energy, and skill into building something lasting. The projects we construct today shape the communities our children and neighbors will inherit tomorrow.

My goal with Dogwood & Deathcap is to contribute to that work in a practical way, helping ensure that development in our region is built on clear thinking, sound evaluation, and long-term stability.

Meaningful change rarely happens overnight. It happens step by step, project by project, decision by decision.
